“Our forefather Avraham was tried with ten tests…”

Michtav M’Eliyahu offers an interesting insight on the concept of nisayon. He explains that the objective of the nisayon is to present the person with an opportunity to engage in avodas Hashem which will merit him a spiritual aliyah -- elevation. Therefore, if he strengthens himself with mesiras nefesh to withstand the nisayon, he will merit Divine mercy and succeed in his effort.

However, one who imagines that withstanding the nisayon will subsequently make it easier for himself, demonstrates that his main focus is to make himself comfortable, with no consideration of character development. This approach encourages the yetzer hora to exert every effort to make the nisayon even more challenging.
