“… and the remuneration of a sin is a sin.”

A Jew owned an inn on the remote stretch of road between two distant villages, which was patronized by many travelers, Jews and non-Jews alike. For economic reasons, he operated two kitchens, one from which he served kosher food, and the other kitchen where he cooked treife foods. If someone came in and did not wash his hands he would know the patron was a goy and would feed him chazzir. When he observed the person washing his hands and making brochos he would know it was a Yid.

One day a traveler stopped in. The innkeeper observed that he didn’t wash his hands nor did he recite a hamotzi on the bread. He inferred that this was a non-Jew and served him chazzir. After he had concluded the meal, the man came over to pay his bill.

“How much do I owe?” he asked.

The innkeeper said, “Eight dinarim.”

The traveler exclaimed, “How could that be? Yesterday I paid ten dinarim at the other inn. How could it be that your price is cheaper?”

The innkeeper responded, “That’s what chazzir costs.”

When the man heard this his hair stood up on end. He was shocked and confused. He said to him, “I’m a Jew and I ate chazzir?”

The innkeeper said, “What should I do? I saw that you didn’t wash and you didn’t make brochos, so I thought you were a goy. “
